Wingate University Announces PA Masters at Hvl Campus

October 24, 2012

Wingate University is a step closer to launching its Physician Assistant Studies master’s degree program at the Hendersonville campus now that the school’s program has been approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.

The university will welcome its first class in August. The deadline to apply for the program is March, said Rosalind Becker, program director of Physician Assistant Studies at Wingate.

The accreditation approval means the university can begin accepting student applications and putting personnel in place, she said.

“Just like our pharmacy program, our students will be there during the day, and it is also a synchronized distance education program, just like our pharmacy program,” Becker said. “This means there are some faculty in Hendersonville, but lectures are done at the same time on both campuses. There is a video feed between the two campuses. Lectures go on at the same time on both campuses and they are seen by both campuses simultaneously.”

There will be two full-time faculty members in the PA program at Hendersonville, she added — an assistant director and a clinical coordinator.

Potential students are required to have a bachelor’s degree, but not in any specific field. They must have nine prerequisite classes in order to apply for the MPAS program, Becker explained. The 27-month program will have students in the classroom for three semesters, followed by a clinical rotation, in order to be candidates for graduation.

An open house for potential applicants will be held from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Hendersonville campus, 220 Fifth Avenue East.
